Beliefs Fuel Action

By the time you were just seven years old, you had developed a whole belief system about life, your place in it, your worth and value and your potential. You also learned about money and where it comes from, you also learned about success and how to achieve it. You learned all this and more from the words, actions and reactions of the adults around you. Some of what you learned was useful and some; not so much.

Your beliefs fuel every action and inaction that you make or do not make. The biggest thing that’s standing in the way of the success that you want; is your mindset.

If you are stuck, trapped, unsatisfied or unfulfilled if you can figure out the beliefs that are holding you back and change them, your new beliefs will fuel new actions and you can be, do, or have anything. How do I know this? I suffered from depression and anxiety for ten years, but my life changed very quickly for the better, once I changed my mindset.

You’ve probably heard of FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out. I think FOMU – Fear Of Messing Up, is a far bigger problem for many people.

Fearing that things won’t go well,  that you’ll get into a mess or that everything will fall apart, holds you back from experiencing so much good in life. It will likely hold you back from even trying and if you don’t try and have new experiences you will never grow your confidence or fulfil on your potential.

Developing a mindset that gives you a surety in your ability to, “make it work” will see you go far.

Imagine how different life would feel if every time you were faced with a difficulty, setback or shock your first thought was…

I Am More Than Enough!  

Practice these words until they stick, make them your go-to thought.

Fireworks can’t go off until you light them. Things will not change until you take action. It’s really easy to get stuck and when we get stuck we tend to shut down, maybe hide and it’s really easy to get frustrated or give up. The problem with this is that nothing will change. I tell my clients to take the next obvious, positive and constructive step forward. It might be something tiny, but if we continue making little moves, step by step, day by day things will start to shift.

We also need to expect things to get better, expectancy in the mind creates the vision to see possibility and potential wherever you are.

You cannot control what others do, say or think, you can influence yes but not control. Many get stuck waiting for someone else to move, to change, to get out of the way. Do what is yours to do. Make the call, type the email, get moving and start the ball rolling. Move and the way will open.

Lovely people, it’s confession time, I’ve not written a blog in forever (since 2017 eek!) I can’t believe it’s been that long, where has the time gone?

It was never my intention to stop writing blogs, so many of you had contacted me to tell me how much you liked my words and writing a new blog was always on my to-do list. I just never seemed to find the time and my attention was always needed elsewhere. Do you ever feel like that, you want to do something but there just never seems to be enough hours in the day?

I actually didn’t stop writing, I have written magazine articles, newsletters, a blog of sorts that went out on Facebook, I’ve even been working on a book, but I just couldn’t seem to get back to writing this blog.  What’s worse, I really like writing this blog, I love that my words can reach you wherever you are in the world and if they inspire, motivate or energise you then that makes me really happy; so what happened?

The truth is I became super busy almost out of nowhere, more and more people were and are approaching me to work privately with me, businesses were and are contacting me to speak to their teams. Running a business is full on, all the time, there’s always so much to do. Here’s the thing, and the learning point for this blog, I am still super busy nothing has changed in that regard, however, I have taken time to refocus and prioritise and created protected time.

My website is going through a refresh at the moment and the other day I came to the site to do a review and there it was…the blog tab, it was like running into a friend that you haven’t seen for years. A little awkward on my part because I haven’t been in touch for so long, but lovely to reconnect. At that moment I made a decision to get back to blogging. That’s how change starts, you have to reach the point where you say to yourself, “Enough is enough!” From that point, you can stop and make a new choice.

The truth is there are plenty of hours in the day, it’s how we utilise them that matters. We will do something if we make a decision to do it and make it important enough. You have to want to do it though, most of the time, if we were honest with ourselves, we are not doing something because….we don’t want to and that’s cool. If you do want to do something; find a way. If not stop feeling bad about not doing it remembering that you don’t want to. Make a new choice. We also need to remember why we are doing the thing and last but not least ensure that we give whatever it is protected time to make sure it gets done.

My lovely Husband often references protected time about certain activities in his job. My private clients talk about it and I even suggest that clients create protected time around activities to ensure they happen. So what’s good for the goose is good for the gander as they say. I have now created protected time in my diary once a fortnight to write a new blog.

Protected time for me means that my phone is in another room so I am not distracted and I am disciplined to ensure that my focus stays on task. Protected time is honouring the task at hand.   

Protected blog-writing time is now in my schedule and I am very clear why I am doing it. I want to serve and reach as many people as I can. I want to inspire, empower and guide them to live the very best lives they can live, to give them the tools to BE, DO and HAVE anything they want and live better than their current level of doubt and limitation may be allowing them. And that’s important to me.

I invite you to think about how you are spending your time. Are you forever complaining that you don’t have enough of it? The truth is you do you, just need to look at what you do with your time. We all seem to find time to watch cat’s play the piano on Youtube, don’t we? And whilst we are playing ‘The Wizard of Oz Magic Match’, on our Ipads we know we probably ought to be writing a blog, meditating, making a juice, tidying our desk etc. I am not saying you can’t watch the cat video, I am saying do watch it, but if we can make time for that we could make time for all the other things that we need to do.

My approach to coaching is quite simple really, I help you get clear on what you want, what success looks and feels like for you, then we identify the blocks and limitations (often self-imposed) that are in the way. Then we dissolve them, creating shifts in mindset and perspective, which then frees you up, so you can go after the success you want. That’s it in a nutshell.  

It’s really easy to get stuck and lose sight of the big picture. I was out shopping the other day and I heard someone say, “The older I get my big dreams just keep getting smaller and smaller.” This is to do with our focus, how we invest our time and resources. I say frequently that we often take better care of our plants, property and pets better than we do ourselves. When was the last you stopped, took some time to look at your life and question how you are living it? Are you happy? Are you stuck? Are you certain there is a better way to live but not sure what it is?

I was talking to a new client recently and he told me he had big goals but was finding hard to make them happen. He told me that more often than not he came home from a busy day, too tired to build the business that was his true passion, his big goal. I asked him how important his goal was and what it meant to him. If your goals are not important you will not make them happen; write that down. Next, we explored how he spent his time when he got home from work and what we discovered unblocked him and has allowed him to move forward. The real issue was not lack of time or tiredness; as he first reported.  

My client explained that when he got home from work, he fed his cat, fed himself and then settled down in front of his…playstation. I inquired after his passion for gaming and he gave me a blow by blow account of his personal gaming history, the consoles he had owned, his top games of all time and a detailed synopsis of the narrative of the game he was currently playing and the characters in the game. When he spoke, he lit up, sounded enthused and spoke with confidence and passion. I then asked him how many days a week he gamed, and on average how many hours he was gaming each time he played. Do you see where I’m going with this? At first, he said he did not know as he was so caught up in the game time just whizzed past. I asked him to give me a ballpark. 

This guy was smart and I could hear the smile on his lips when he claimed he did not know. I gently pressed him and reminded him that there would be no judgement on my part, the reason that my clients report that they feel safe with me is that they know that I do not judge them and I don’t. My role is to help unpick the messes we get ourselves in and help you to create solutions to move forward.  No one needs me to make them feel worse than they already do. “Honestly,” he said, “I game 6-7 nights a week and I don’t really want to admit it, but usually I play for 6-8 hours of time each time I play. I just get completely caught up in it. I then roll into bed at 2 am and I wake up exhausted. If I’m honest now I’ve said it out loud this has turned into a problem.” 

“So,” I said. “If you are gaming 7 days a week, if we times that by 8 hours a session, that’s 56 hours a week that you are devoting to gaming, that’s 2,912 hours a year. How do I know that? I’ve just worked it out on the calculator on my phone. We all have gifts, Maths…not mine! Do you think you could make your business happen, your dream if you weren’t so tired and had 56 hours a week to develop it?” Of course, he agreed he could, easily. We, of course, went on to look at what was driving the pattern that this guy was caught up in. Awareness is the first step to changing anything. That’s why coaching is so powerful, it allows you to look at yourself and your life in a safe and supported way, equips you with tools and personal strategies and empowers you to make changes. No fuss, no mess and no judgment on my watch.   

I also pointed out that he spoke with more passion and enthusiasm about the fictional avatar that he was playing on the screen than he did about himself or his own life and it seemed that he was more invested in the central characters fictional life than he was in his own. He considered that for a moment and then mused, that if he could transfer that passion and enthusiasm to creating his business, his success would be inevitable, BOOM, mindset shift. 

Please do not misunderstand me, there is nothing wrong with gaming or any other hobby. Howeverwhen a hobby or interest gets out of hand and takes over your life, it has become unbalanced, maybe even unhealthy. It’s really easy to create distraction activities when we have a hesitance or resistance to do something. How many times have you thought to yourself, “Right today is the day I need to complete my tax return!” or whatever the dreaded task is and before you know it, you are rearranging your cutlery drawer or watching a cat play the piano on Youtube? We’ve all done it.  

The blocks that we claim to have, be it time, resources, tiredness is usually (but not always) a result of choices that we are making. Herein lies our power as human beings, our thinking faculty allows us the imagination to create a dream or vision for our lives. This same faculty (our thinking) allows us to make the choices that we need to make, to create the action to make the dream or goal happen. 

Put simply, Thoughts + Action = Success. 

I invite you to ask yourself…

Are truly invested in your life or is your focus elsewhere?

Are you losing a handle on your personal reality, in favour of a virtual one?

Are you spending time wisely building a life that makes you happy or has a distraction activity derailed you?

“Paul you really clearly have such a natural infectious enthusiasm for life.”

This was one of the best things that my mentor and Dear friend Fiona Harrold ever said to me. It wasn’t always this way. There was a time when I hardly ever laughed or smiled, I was completely lost inside of myself. The other day someone said to me, “You say Wow a lot, did you know that?” I told them that I make it a priority to notice what’s around me and find things to find wonderment in. Life is exciting and there is a lot to say wow about.

Pay attention. Life is amazing and beautiful and wonderful. Yes, times can be tough and we can face huge challenges but it doesn’t mean life isn’t still beautiful and wonderful. We choose where we put our attention. Notice the fascinating, the beautiful, the odd, the unusual, the extraordinary.

I visited an aquarium recently with my Husband and I was mesmerised by these little creatures called Weedy Sea Dragons. They are exquisite little things that look alien, magical as if JK Rowling had written them into the pages of a book.


In that moment, these tiny creatures held my whole attention; I was in awe. This is a practice that can be achieved by noticing, being mindful and paying attention. It grounds you in the present moment, expands your horizons and feeds your spirit.
