I Love Me - Paul Scadding

Yesterday (Wednesday, 19th June 2024), I spent the afternoon with my niece Rosie, 3 and 3/4 (the 3/4 matters – ALOT!) and Nephew Leo (18 months). They had stuffed me into their little playhouse in the garden (see pic), and out of nowhere, Rosie grabbed Leo, hugged him and gave him a big kiss. SO CUTE!

“Ah, that’s lovely, Rosie. Do you love Leo?” I said.

“Yes,” she said emphatically.

“Who else do you love?” I asked.

Rosie started to reel off all of the members of our family, including Uncle Paul, Uncle Matt, Nanny, Mummy, Daddy and so on.

“Ah, that’s so lovely, and we all love you!” I said, thinking that she had finished. What happened next made my heart swell.

“And I love me as well!” Said Rosie with great pride.

“Oh, WOW, brilliant, I am so pleased to hear you say that! It’s really important to love yourself. Well done you, you are so clever!”

It’s easy to think it’s just cute coming from an almost 4-year-old, and the cynic in us could say it won’t last. But, it reminds me that at any time, we can choose to shift or renew the relationship we have with ourselves. We can choose to love ourselves, be kinder to ourselves and treat ourselves with care and compassion.

Let’s all be more like Rosie.
